2026 Report: how much SME costs have really risen in the UK and Ireland (official CSO & ONS data)

September 15, 2026·9 min read·Syntra Blog

We checked the official numbers: Irish restaurant prices +4.4% year on year, UK structural steel +17.7%, UK services producer prices +4.3%. With sources and links to every official figure.

Most articles about "rising costs" in 2026 talk in vague terms: "prices are up", "suppliers are charging more". Not here. We checked the official statistics from Ireland's CSO and the UK's ONS over the past few months to put real numbers on what most small business owners already suspect: their costs have gone up more than their selling prices reflect.

The general picture: inflation hasn't gone away

In Ireland, the Consumer Price Index rose between 3.4% and 3.7% year on year through 2026 (3.7% in the year to April, 3.4% in the year to July), according to the CSO. In the UK, services producer prices — a good proxy for what businesses pay each other — rose 4.3% year on year in Q2 2026, up from 3.2% in Q1, according to the ONS.

Restaurants & hospitality: Ireland's price growth is outpacing general inflation

Irish restaurant prices rose 4.4% year on year in Q2 2026 — the strongest growth in the foodservice market — while the broader QSR market rose 3.5%, against general food inflation of around 3.3% in February 2026. Restaurants & Accommodation Services was the second-largest contributor to Irish CPI in the year to August 2026, after housing.

Labour costs compound the problem: from January 2026, hospitality operators also faced a nearly 5% increase in the National Minimum Wage, alongside pension auto-enrolment costs — on top of higher food and drink input prices.

Construction: UK material prices are accelerating, not stabilising

For builders, tradespeople and anyone working with physical materials, the UK picture in 2026 is one of clear acceleration:

MaterialChange
Material price index, "All Work"+2.1% (Feb) → +3.2% (Apr) → +6.0% (June), year on year
Fabricated structural steel+17.7% in 2026
Imported sawn/planed timber+7.6% year on year

The acceleration matters as much as the level: a job quoted in February on a +2.1% assumption and actually built in June is absorbing a material cost that has nearly tripled its rate of increase in four months.

Ecommerce & retail: postal and courier costs are rising in 2026 too

Royal Mail raised parcel prices again from 5 October 2026 — covering Tracked, Special Delivery Guaranteed and Signed For services — and had already increased its Fuel and Energy Surcharge from 11% to 16% back in May 2026, according to Royal Mail's own pricing pages.

For a small ecommerce business shipping 300 parcels a month, that combination of a base price rise plus a higher fuel surcharge adds up to real money that comes straight out of margin if the selling price isn't adjusted.

Professional services: the inflation that never shows up on an invoice

UK services producer prices — covering everything from consultancy to technical and creative services — rose 4.3% year on year in Q2 2026, accelerating from 3.2% in Q1. For freelancers, designers and consultants, this figure doesn't appear on any "raw materials" invoice — it shows up as software subscription increases, higher subcontractor rates and platform fees that climb every year without the project quote ever being revisited.

What this means for your real margin

Very few businesses review their selling prices as often as their suppliers review theirs. Based on the figures above, the result is predictable:

  • A restaurant that hasn't touched its food cost since last year could be working with a margin several points lower than it thinks — especially with minimum wage up nearly 5% on top.
  • A builder who quoted a job on February steel and timber prices, and built it in June, may have lost 10-20% of the margin on materials alone.
  • An ecommerce business that hasn't passed on the October 2026 postage increase is losing margin on every single order, quietly.
  • The way to avoid this isn't guessing how much prices have gone up — it's having the exact figure from your latest invoice, not an estimate based on what you paid a year ago. That's exactly what Syntra's cost calculator is for: every invoice you upload automatically updates the real cost of your materials, ingredients or resources, so the price you calculate today reflects what you're actually paying today.
